The Transportation Club of Houston’s 2013 Scholarship Recipients were announced at the 98th Annual Dinner on May 14, 2013.

2013 Scholarship Application Now Available!

For many years the Transportation Club of Houston has been proud to offer scholarship awards to undergraduate students who have a great interest in our industry. In 2013, TCH will be offering the Phillip G. Cohen Scholarship, Joy Lloyd Scholarship and Leo Stupor Scholarship awards.

2012 TCH Scholarship Winners

TCH scholarships are awarded to college undergraduates sponsored by a TCH member or a college/university faculty member.

This year’s application deadline is April 30, 2013. Awards in the amount of $1,000-$3,000 will be presented to the winners at the Annual Dinner in May. Winners must be present at the Annual Dinner to receive the award.

Passing of Jerry Nagel

It is with great sadness we report the passing of Gerard (Jerry) Nagel. A longtime leader in the maritime industry, Jerry was recognized by the Greater Houston Port Bureau in 2012 as the Maritime Person of the Year.

A memorial service for Jerry will be held Monday, January 7th, 10:00 a.m. at St. Edwards Catholic Church: 2601 Spring Stuebner Rd., Spring, Texas 77398.

Passing of Member Phillip Berger

Phillip Berger passed away Monday, October 22. A longtime TCH member, he worked for Harris Moving & Storage, Stewart & Stevenson and most recently at TAM, Int’l. The funeral was held Thursday, Oct 25th. Please keep the Berger family in your thoughts and prayers.

Passing of Member Phillip G. Cohen

It is with great sadness that we report the unexpected passing of TCH member Phillip G. Cohen on Tuesday, October 24th. Phil had been an avid supporter of the club since joining in 2008, and introduced dozens of local college students to our club and industry. Phil was named the 2012 TCH Member of the Year at the annual dinner in May.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial contributions in Mr. Cohen’s name be directed to the San Jacinto College Scholarship Fund, 4624 Fairmont Parkway, Suite 212, Pasadena, TX, 77504.

TCH Past President Joe Payne (’78-’79) Passes Away

Joe Weldon Payne: beloved father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather, was born May 30, 1937 to Jack Aldrich Payne and Edith Mary Hoefert Payne, died on June 11, 2012.

Joe was predeceased by his parents; and his beloved sister, Louise.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 53 years, Elizabeth Krovontka Payne; daughter, Angela Payne Ward and husband, Robert, of Longview; son, Dr. Lee Weldon Payne of Nacogdoches; daughter, Edith Payne Schneider and husband, Tommie, of Damon; grandchildren, Amanda (Heart) and husband, Fernando, Elizabeth and husband, John, Timothy, Eden, Alyssa, Anna, Amy and Charlie; great grandchildren, Savannah, Braydon and Dominic; sister, Willa Story; brothers, William and wife, Vicki, Steve, John, Gary and wife, Elaine; brother-in-law, Stan Krovontka and wife, Donna; sister-in-law, Martha Coppedge; mother-in-law, Carmel Krovontka; and many nieces and nephews.

Joe was a devoted father, grandfather, great grandfather, mentor and friend to so many. He will be extremely missed. Being with family was Joe’s top priority. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart.

He was a graduate of the Houston College System and was president of Delta Nu Alpha Fraternity and the University of Houston, president of the Houston Transportation Club, and president elect of the Texas Industrial Transportation League. He was a registered practitioner before the Interstate Commerce Commission and the Federal Maritime Commission. Joe was a two-term appointee to the Advisory Committee of Texas A&M Transportation Institute.

Joe proudly served in the United States Army – Infantry. He was a Golden Gloves Boxing Champion-Featherweight Division. Joe was a long time parishioner at St. Theresa Catholic Church of Sugar Land and served as the Eucharist Minister, Lector and Usher.

Pallbearers serving are William Payne, Woodrow Coppedge, Jr., Gary Hickey, Dennis Donigan, Marshall Ott, Mike Gonzalez, John Story and Timothy Ward.
Honorary pallbearers are Bobby Oballe, John Dotson, Stan Krovontka, Bob Evans, Kerry Payne and Ed Wesley.
